Indigo is Indian.

Before it was a colour in a paint swatch or a dye in a fast-fashion vat, indigo was Indigofera tinctoria — a plant grown in Indian soil for over three thousand years. It coloured the robes of Mughal emperors, fuelled colonial trade wars, and inspired Gandhi's most defiant act of resistance. The British tried to own it. The Indian earth kept making it.

This jean is dyed with it.

The Cloth

12oz Indian selvedge denim, shuttle-loom woven and dyed with natural indigo in Bagh, Madhya Pradesh — one of the last remaining centres of natural indigo dyeing in the country. Lighter than our usual 14oz, this cloth is built for the Indian climate: substantial enough to develop serious fades, light enough to wear through summer.

Raw and unsanforized. It will shrink. Plan for approximately 1 inch in the waist and 1.5 inches in length on first cold soak.

The Indigo

Natural indigo fades differently from synthetic. The colour is layered into the yarn through repeated dip-and-oxidise cycles — the more dips, the deeper the blue. As you wear the jean, the indigo releases slowly from the high points first: the thighs, the knees, the seat. What's left is a map of how you move.

No two pairs fade the same way. That's the point.

The Details

— Natural indigo selvedge ID on the outseam — Raw, unsanforized 12oz cloth — Slim straight cut, sits at the natural waist — Hidden rivets at all stress points — Bar-tack reinforced pockets — Brass hardware throughout — Numbered leather patch

The Care

Cold soak only. Inside out. No detergent for the first six months — let the indigo develop its own rhythm. The first wash will bleed. That's normal. That's the dye doing what it has done for three thousand years.

Hang dry. Never machine wash. Never tumble dry.
